On June 15th, the Columbus, OH chapter of the ITA College Tennis Alumni Network hosted its thrilling 5th Annual Jimmy Holland Memorial Tournament at the Swim and Racquet Tennis Club in Columbus, Ohio. This event is a heartfelt tribute to Jimmy Holland, a beloved friend and former collegiate player at St. Joseph’s in Philadelphia, who tragically passed away in 2017.
What started as a simple gathering of friends for tennis and drinks has grown into a highly anticipated annual celebration, drawing in a vibrant mix of current and former collegiate players. This year’s tournament was a spectacular showcase of talent and camaraderie, with around 60 men and 20 women competing in men’s, women’s, and mixed draws.
The atmosphere was electric as players from Ohio State, Toledo, Denison, Cincinnati, Xavier, and Cleveland State, along with alumni from various other schools, battled it out on the courts. The event wasn’t just about the competition; it was a fantastic social occasion that welcomed an additional 50 alumni and guests who came to cheer, reconnect, and enjoy the festivities.
This year, current Ohio State players Alex Fuchs and Brandon Carpico captured the men’s title, and current high school senior Amiya Bowles partnered with incoming Xavier freshman Clara Owen to take home the women’s title.
“Thanks to our generous sponsor, Jeff Ruby’s Catering, and the unwavering support from the ITA, we were able to give away over $3000 in money and prizes. But more importantly, we fostered connections between current collegiate players, recent graduates, and established alumni, strengthening our community bonds.
